In the late 50s, a very important Love story was developing.
In the new country of Pakistan, my dad was choosing who he was going to marry when he was just 11 years old. Of course, He chose my curly-haired – Shirly Temple – Round-faced -mom! She was just 11 months old when he chose her.
From that moment on, this good young boy-man had to wait for her. She had to do things too as prescribed by her mom and older girls helping grow her!
My Mom’s biggest task in love from that moment on was to avoid being seen by her husband to be. This is the tradition. She was to be shy and coy-never seen by him. Her job was to avoid him – growing up from 11 years old till, until their arranged marriage wedding day, she knew she was his.
For more than 12 years my father knew my Mom was to be his bride! He watched from afar and wanted to know… craved to see her.
Romantic real-life hide and seek they were playing while in their imagination
Every Hindi movie or Hollywood movie each watched- He was the hero and she was his love! Imagine the intensity of feelings that might develop in the ears they grew.
Imagine how he felt knowing who his wife to be was…going to be his

My father and mother knew LOVE as the image of the other… They knew love and grew into becoming for the other.
So many nights and days…finally, they were to be married! In the late 60s they were dressed up and given to each other!
Rose, Jasmine, and fragrant flowers on her, around her. Dressed in opulence, gold, and red. Beloved each of them already. In ceremonies, lightly touching hands or brushing against each other as they do the rituals. Seeing each other’s eyes for the first time in a mirror – held -lifting her veil ever so slightly.
Imagine seeing your beloved in the mirror for the first time. Tradition states, you will never forget the feeling or the moment if you share it with another in a mirror -or looking glass as it translates in URDU.
It is a tradition for the man to give his wife a special gift on their wedding night!
My father’s special gift was a song…
His song included the great poems he had learned, memorized, and turned into a song.
Full Quote from Rumi, “The minute I heard my first love story, I started looking for you, not knowing how blind that was. Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere. They’re in each other all along.”
On there decorated wedding bed, he sang to her! His heart and voice shakey, every part of him alive!
